Terme di Saturnia

Natural thermal waters at 37°C surrounded by Tuscan countryside, 45 minutes from Montiano.

Hidden in the gentle green hills of southern Tuscany, the thermal springs of Saturnia have attracted visitors for over two thousand years. Legend has it that Saturn himself hurled a thunderbolt to Earth, creating a volcanic crater from which warm, sulphurous water has flowed ever since. Today, the Cascate del Mulino - a series of natural travertine pools where steaming water tumbles over limestone terraces - are among Italy's most iconic and photographed natural wonders. Best of all, they are completely free to visit, open 24 hours a day, and just 45 minutes by car from our apartment in Montiano.

Cascate del Mulino - The Free Thermal Baths

The Cascate del Mulino (Mulino Waterfalls) are the star attraction. Here, thermal water at a constant 37.5°C cascades over naturally formed limestone pools, creating a series of warm basins of different depths. You simply walk in, find a pool and soak - no tickets, no opening hours, no reservations. The mineral-rich water is believed to have therapeutic properties for the skin, joints and respiratory system, thanks to its high content of sulphur, calcium and magnesium carbonate.

The setting is magical at any time of day, but sunrise and sunset offer the most atmospheric experience, with steam rising from the pools against the Tuscan skyline. Winter visits are particularly special - soaking in naturally hot water while the air is crisp and cool is unforgettable.

Practical Tips for Visiting

When to Go

Early morning (before 8 a.m.) or late afternoon offers the smallest crowds and the best light for photographs. Weekdays are significantly quieter than weekends, especially in summer. The pools are open year-round, and each season brings a different charm - lush green surroundings in spring, warm evenings in summer, golden foliage in autumn and atmospheric mist in winter.

What to Bring

Bring a swimsuit, towel, waterproof sandals (the rocks can be slippery) and a bag for valuables. The sulphur content can discolour silver jewellery and light-coloured swimwear, so leave those at home. There is a small bar near the car park selling drinks and snacks, but no changing facilities - most visitors change at their car.

Getting There from Montiano

Drive north-east through the Maremma countryside via Manciano or Scansano - both routes take roughly 45 minutes and pass through beautiful rolling hills and vineyards. Free parking is available in a field beside the road, a short walk from the pools. Arrive early in peak season to secure a spot.

Terme di Saturnia Spa Resort

For a more luxurious thermal experience, the Terme di Saturnia Spa & Golf Resort sits just upstream from the free cascades. The resort channels the same natural spring water into elegant pools, hydro-massage circuits and treatment rooms. Day passes are available and include access to the thermal pool, Roman bath, waterfall pool and gardens. Spa treatments range from mud wraps to thermal water massages. It's a wonderful option for a special day out, and can be combined with a round on the resort's golf course.

The Village of Saturnia

The ancient village of Saturnia itself is worth a stroll. Perched on a travertine ridge above the thermal valley, it retains Etruscan and Roman walls, a handful of restaurants serving hearty Maremma cuisine, and sweeping views over the countryside. Combine a morning at the pools with lunch in the village for a perfect half-day trip from Montiano.

Whether you choose the wild, free pools of the Cascate del Mulino or the refined luxury of the spa resort, a visit to Terme di Saturnia is one of the most memorable experiences the Tuscan Maremma has to offer - and from our apartment, it's barely three-quarters of an hour away.
