Porto Ercole is a jewel on the southern coast of Monte Argentario and one of the prettiest villages in Italy - officially recognised as a Borgo più bello d'Italia. Smaller and quieter than its neighbour Porto Santo Stefano, Porto Ercole enchants visitors with its Renaissance fortresses, intimate harbour, pastel-coloured houses and an atmosphere that feels suspended in time. It is a place where Tuscan elegance meets raw coastal beauty.
The Historic Centre & Harbour
Porto Ercole's old town climbs steeply from the water, with narrow stone lanes, archways and unexpected piazzas offering views over terracotta rooftops to the sea. The small harbour is lined with fishing boats and modest yachts, bordered by trattorias where you can eat grilled fish just metres from where it was landed. A stone gateway - the Porta Senese - marks the entrance to the historic centre, and the atmosphere inside is that of a village that has changed very little over centuries. Wander slowly, get lost in the lanes, and discover tiny artisan shops and vine-covered terraces along the way.
The Spanish Fortresses
Porto Ercole's dramatic skyline is defined by three imposing fortresses built by the Spanish in the 16th century to defend this strategic stretch of coast. Forte Stella, perched on the hill above the village, is the most accessible and offers extraordinary panoramic views. Forte Filippo, partly in ruins, can be explored on a short hike through Mediterranean scrub. The third, the Rocca, sits above the old town. Together they form one of the best-preserved military architecture complexes in Tuscany and a fascinating reminder of Argentario's turbulent history under Spanish rule.
Caravaggio in Porto Ercole
Porto Ercole holds a unique place in art history as the place where Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio - the revolutionary Baroque painter - died in 1610. After a turbulent life of genius and violence, Caravaggio arrived here ill and desperate, and died in circumstances that remain partly mysterious. A memorial in the parish church and a dedicated garden commemorate him. In 2010 his remains were identified in the local cemetery, adding another layer of poignancy to this remarkable story. Art lovers will find the Caravaggio connection a compelling reason to visit Porto Ercole.
Beaches Around Porto Ercole
Porto Ercole provides access to some of the finest swimming spots on Argentario. Le Viste beach, just south of the village, is a small sandy cove with transparent water - an easy walk from the centre. Further along the coast, the beaches of Spiaggia Lunga and Cala del Gesso are reachable by car or on foot. The eastern side of Feniglia beach (the long sandy tombolo) starts right at the edge of Porto Ercole, offering kilometres of sand backed by pine forest. Each of these Porto Ercole beaches has its own character, from wild and rocky to family-friendly.
Restaurants & Dining
Dining in Porto Ercole is a relaxed, deeply satisfying experience. The harbour-side restaurants specialise in fresh seafood - try the raw fish platters (crudo di mare), lobster linguine, or simply grilled local catch with a squeeze of lemon. For something more casual, several enoteca-style bars serve excellent Morellino di Scansano wine with platters of local cured meats and pecorino cheese. In the evening, the soft light reflecting off the harbour water creates the perfect setting for a long, unhurried Italian dinner.
Porto Ercole is a 15-minute drive from our apartment in Montiano, making it easy to spend an afternoon exploring the village, swimming at Le Viste beach, and staying for a memorable dinner as the sun sets over Argentario.
