The Tuscan Maremma offers some of the most beautiful and varied hiking in central Italy. From wild coastal trails overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea to shaded forest walks through nature reserves, there is something for every walker. The landscape here feels timeless - Mediterranean scrub, ancient watchtowers, herds of Maremma cattle and long stretches of coast where you won't see another soul. These are the best trails near Argentario, all easily accessible from our apartment in Montiano.
Parco della Maremma (Uccellina)
The Parco Regionale della Maremma, also known as the Uccellina Park, is the jewel of Maremma hiking. This protected area stretches along the coast south of Grosseto, covering forested hills, pristine beaches and a rich wetland zone. Several marked trails start from the visitor centre in Alberese:
Trail A1 - San Rabano
The most popular hike leads to the ruins of the 11th-century San Rabano abbey, perched on a hilltop deep in the park. The trail passes through dense Mediterranean maquis - rosemary, lentisk, juniper and holm oak - before reaching the atmospheric ruins with views over the coast. Allow 3–4 hours for the full loop. The trail is moderately challenging with some steep sections.
Trail A2 - Le Torri
This coastal route follows the ridge of the Uccellina hills, connecting a series of medieval watchtowers built to defend against Saracen raids. The views over the sea and the wild beaches below are extraordinary. Parts of the path are exposed and rocky, so sturdy footwear is essential. The full trail takes about 5 hours, but shorter versions are possible.
Trail A3 - Le Grotte
A shorter, easier hike that descends to the coast and passes prehistoric caves used by humans thousands of years ago. It ends at one of the park's most beautiful wild beaches - perfect for a swim before heading back. This trail takes about 2 hours and is suitable for families with older children.
Duna Feniglia Nature Reserve
The Duna Feniglia is a 6-kilometre sand tombolo connecting Argentario to the mainland, covered in a dense pine and holm oak forest. A flat, easy trail runs the entire length - perfect for a gentle walk, a jog or a family outing. The forest is home to fallow deer, which you'll often spot grazing quietly among the trees. On one side lies the Orbetello lagoon (a birdwatching paradise), on the other the Feniglia beach with its clear, shallow water. You can walk the full length in about an hour and a half, with the option to stop at the beach at any point.
Argentario Coastal Paths
Monte Argentario itself is laced with paths that follow the rugged coastline, leading to panoramic viewpoints and hidden coves. The trail from Porto Santo Stefano along the Passeggiata panoramica is the most accessible, but more adventurous walkers can explore the paths descending to Cala del Gesso, Cala Piccola and the western cliffs. These trails are often steep, rocky and unmarked - a sense of adventure and good shoes are required. The reward is reaching beaches and viewpoints that most visitors never see.
The Orbetello Lagoon Walk
For a completely flat, relaxed walk with exceptional birdwatching, follow the paths around the Orbetello lagoon. The WWF Oasi di Orbetello nature reserve protects one of the most important wetlands in Italy, hosting flamingos, herons, ospreys and hundreds of other species - especially during the spring and autumn migrations. Guided visits are available, and binoculars are well worth bringing. The lagoon is at its most atmospheric in the early morning and at sunset, when the water mirrors the sky in shades of pink and gold.
Practical Tips for Hiking in Maremma
The best months for hiking in Maremma are March to June and September to November, when temperatures are comfortable and the landscape is green. Summer hiking is possible but best limited to early morning due to the heat. Always carry plenty of water, sun protection and a snack. Parco della Maremma charges a small entry fee and some trails require booking - check at the Alberese visitor centre or online before your visit.
Our apartment in Montiano is perfectly positioned for exploring these trails, sitting between the Parco della Maremma and Monte Argentario with all the major trailheads just 10 to 20 minutes away by car.
