Cycling Around Argentario & Maremma

Scenic bike routes through lagoons, coastal paths and rolling Tuscan hills

Cycling around Monte Argentario and the Tuscan Maremma is one of the most rewarding ways to experience this extraordinary landscape. Flat lagoon paths, panoramic coastal roads and challenging hill climbs offer something for every level of rider. The mild Mediterranean climate means comfortable cycling from March through November, with spring and early autumn being the best seasons to ride.

The Orbetello Lagoon Cycle Path

The most popular cycling route in the area follows the flat paths around the Orbetello lagoon. This easy, family-friendly ride takes you along the dams connecting Orbetello to Monte Argentario, with the shimmering lagoon on both sides and pink flamingos often visible in the shallows. The full loop is approximately 25 kilometres, mostly on dedicated cycle paths and quiet roads. You can start from Orbetello town or from the Feniglia pine forest, where a beautiful traffic-free track runs the entire 6-kilometre length of the tombolo.

The Argentario Panoramic Road

For more experienced cyclists, the road circling Monte Argentario is an unforgettable ride. The Strada Panoramica climbs and dips along the coast, passing through Mediterranean maquis with dramatic views over hidden coves and out to the islands of Giglio and Giannutri. The full loop is about 40 kilometres with significant elevation gain - expect steep gradients, tight bends, and breathtaking rewards. Start early in the morning to avoid traffic and enjoy cooler temperatures.

Mountain Biking in Parco della Maremma

The Parco Regionale della Maremma (Uccellina Park) offers excellent off-road cycling. Several designated MTB trails wind through the park's diverse terrain - coastal pine forests, Mediterranean scrub, open pastures where Maremma cowboys still herd longhorn cattle, and stretches of wild, undeveloped beach. Trails vary from easy fire roads to more technical single-track. A park entry fee applies, and some routes require advance booking at the visitor centre in Alberese. The combination of nature, history (ruined medieval towers dot the hills) and physical challenge makes this one of the best mountain biking experiences in Tuscany.

The Wine Country Loop

Heading inland from Montiano, you can ride through the gently rolling hills of the Morellino di Scansano wine region. Quiet country roads pass vineyards, olive groves and stone farmhouses, with the occasional stop at a cantina for a tasting. A popular route runs from Montiano to Magliano in Toscana (a charming walled village) and on to Scansano, covering about 50 kilometres round trip with moderate hills. This is cycling Tuscany at its finest - empty roads, sweeping views and the scent of wild herbs in the air.

Bike Rentals & Practical Tips

Bike rental shops are available in Orbetello and Porto Santo Stefano, offering road bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes by the day or week. Many accommodations can also arrange delivery. For e-bikes, expect to pay around €35–50 per day. Road surfaces are generally good, though the Argentario panoramic road has some rough patches. Always carry water, especially in summer, and pack a puncture repair kit for off-road rides.

Our apartment in Montiano sits in an ideal position for cycling in every direction - downhill to the Orbetello lagoon, along the coast to Argentario, or inland through the Maremma wine country. Store your bikes safely and set off each morning on a new adventure.
