Florence New Year's Eve: Where to Celebrate

New Year’s Eve in Florence is a combination of civic events, restaurant celebrations, and general street activity. It is not the most elaborate New Year’s Eve in Italy (Venice and Rome draw larger international crowds), but it is a genuine celebration with a good programme.

The city is busy from 28 December through 2 January. Accommodation and restaurants at this time are in high demand, and prices for both reflect this. Planning 4-6 weeks in advance is standard.

New Year’s Eve in Florence: the options

There are three broadly distinct ways to spend New Year’s Eve in Florence.

The first is the free civic programme: open-air concerts and events in the main piazzas, culminating at midnight. These are free, public, and accessible without advance booking.

The second is a restaurant cenone di Capodanno (New Year’s dinner): a fixed-price multi-course meal, typically including wine, that runs from around 20:00 to midnight and beyond. Prices range from 60 to 150 euros per person. Booking is essential, usually several weeks ahead.

The third is a venue-organised party: clubs, bars, and event spaces run New Year’s Eve parties with advance ticket sales. These vary widely in price, from around 30 to 100 euros, and usually include a drink on entry.

There is no right option. It depends on your budget and what kind of evening you want.

Piazza della Repubblica at midnight

The city’s main public New Year’s celebration is centred on Piazza della Repubblica. In most recent years, the Comune di Firenze has organised a concert in the square with the midnight countdown.

The programme typically begins around 22:00 with live music and continues past midnight. The square fills from 23:00. By 23:45 it is packed. Security is present and the atmosphere is generally festive and calm.

Entry is free. No tickets are required. Take normal precautions for a crowded public space: use inside pockets or a zipped bag, keep your group together, and agree on a meeting point in case you get separated.

The Via dei Tornabuoni Christmas lights are still up at New Year and the walk from the station through the lit street to Piazza della Repubblica is a good way to approach the square.

Piazza Santa Croce and Piazza della Signoria also draw crowds at midnight and are alternative options if Piazza della Repubblica feels too compressed.

Free concerts and events

The Comune di Firenze publishes the full New Year’s Eve programme in December. Check firenze.it for the current year’s events, locations, and timings.

In addition to the main concert at Piazza della Repubblica, there are typically:

  • Outdoor music at Piazza Santa Croce
  • Events at the Fortezza da Basso (sometimes a ticketed concert by a national artist)
  • Bar and club events across the Oltrarno and the Santa Croce area

The Estate Fiorentina programme wraps up with New Year events at venues across the city. These are usually free or low-cost.

For fireworks: Florence does not run an official citywide fireworks display in the way that cities like Sydney or London do. Some private celebrations and venues set off fireworks, but these are not coordinated or announced in advance. The view from Piazzale Michelangelo at midnight captures whatever is happening across the city skyline.

Restaurants and New Year menus

The cenone di Capodanno (New Year’s dinner) is a Florentine institution. Most mid-range to high-end restaurants run a fixed menu that spans several hours, usually from 20:00 to midnight or later.

Typical components of a cenone di Capodanno in Florence:

  • Antipasto (cured meats, crostini, seafood depending on the restaurant)
  • First course (pasta or risotto, sometimes two options)
  • Main course (meat or fish, sometimes both)
  • Dessert (often including the traditional lentils for luck in the new year)
  • Wine and sometimes champagne for the toast

Prices: most restaurants in the centre charge between 70 and 120 euros per person for this menu. Luxury restaurants charge 150 euros or more.

Booking timelines: the most popular restaurants fill their New Year’s Eve slots by late November. Booking in early December is safer. Last-minute options exist but require flexibility on venue.

For a less formal alternative, some wine bars and enoteche run New Year’s Eve events with a lighter menu and free-flowing wine at 40-60 euros per person.

How to get around at night

ATAF buses run extended services on New Year’s Eve until approximately 02:00 or 03:00 in most years. Check the ATAF website for the specific New Year’s night timetable, which is usually published in mid-December.

Trams (T1 and T2) also run extended hours on New Year’s Eve. The airport tram (T2) is useful if you are arriving on the evening of 31 December or departing early on 1 January.

Taxis are in high demand after midnight on New Year’s Eve. Expect waits of 30-60 minutes if you call for one at 01:00 or 02:00. Pre-booking a taxi for a specific return time is an option with some companies; call ahead during the day.

The historic centre is walkable. If you are staying within 1.5-2 km of the main piazzas, walking back at midnight in a group is perfectly safe and arguably preferable to waiting for transport in the cold.

The area around Santa Maria Novella station is about a 15-minute walk from Piazza della Repubblica. Via dei Tornabuoni (Florence’s main luxury shopping street, also the main Christmas-lit route) connects the two.
