San Miniato white truffle: fair, restaurants, and how to get there

San Miniato is a hilltop town in the lower Arno valley, sitting at the convergence of the provinces of Pisa, Florence, and Siena. Its skyline is dominated by two medieval towers and the cathedral apse. In November the town becomes one of the most important truffle destinations in Italy.

From Barberino Val d’Elsa the distance is about 45 km and the drive takes roughly 40 minutes on roads heading northwest through Certaldo or via the Empoli area.

San Miniato and the white truffle

The rolling hills around San Miniato, covered in mixed oak and poplar woodland with specific soil conditions, are among the most productive white truffle zones in central Italy. The tartufo bianco di San Miniato, Tuber magnatum Pico, grows from October to December in the woodland of the lower Valdarno, the Valdera, and the Valdelsa hills.

San Miniato white truffle is commercially and gastronomically significant enough to compete with the more famous production from Alba in Piedmont. The flavour profile of the two is similar but enthusiasts argue for specific local differences related to soil composition and microclimate.

The price of white truffle varies with the season and the quality of the harvest. In years with good autumn rainfall and mild temperatures, the price per kilogram falls to around 2,000 euros. In poor years with dry conditions, it can exceed 5,000 euros per kilogram. Even a few grams shaved over pasta represents a significant luxury.

The truffle market and fair

The Mostra Mercato Nazionale del Tartufo Bianco di San Miniato takes place over three weekends in November. In 2026 the event will run on the weekends of 14-15, 21-22, and 28-29 November.

The fair occupies the historic centre of San Miniato, with truffle sellers installed under temporary structures in the main streets and piazzas. More than 100 truffle hunters and dealers participate. You can buy fresh white truffle directly, compare specimens, smell the differences, and negotiate prices.

The fair also includes cooking demonstrations, wine tastings, and themed lunches at local restaurants. A central market space allows direct purchase of truffle and truffle products.

Arrive in the morning on Saturday or Sunday. The first hour after opening, typically nine or ten in the morning, is the best time to see the full selection before the most exceptional specimens are sold. Serious buyers, including restaurant procurement staff and wholesale dealers, arrive first.

Entry to the town and the street fair is free. Individual purchases are cash or card depending on the seller.

When it takes place and how to attend

The three November weekends are the core event. Each weekend has a slightly different focus: the first introduces the season’s harvest, the middle weekend is typically the most heavily attended, and the final weekend often has the best prices as sellers are keen to close the season.

If you can attend only one weekend, the middle one (third or fourth week of November) offers the best balance of selection and atmosphere.

Parking in San Miniato is available in the lower part of the town. A shuttle service typically runs from the parking areas to the historic centre during fair weekends. Check the official fair website in October for the specific parking and transport arrangements.

The town is crowded on fair weekends. Accommodation within San Miniato books out quickly. Staying at Barberino Val d’Elsa and driving in for the day is a practical alternative. You arrive in about 40 minutes, spend the morning at the fair, have lunch in the town, and return in the afternoon.

Restaurants serving truffle dishes

San Miniato has several restaurants that participate in the fair with special truffle menus. These range from simple trattorias serving pici or tagliatelle with fresh white truffle to more elaborate restaurant meals with multiple courses.

Il Convio and Pepenero are among the names that have maintained quality over several seasons. Both are small and book out quickly during fair weekends. Reserve a week in advance if possible.

The most straightforward and honest truffle preparation remains uova strapazzate al tartufo, soft scrambled eggs with white truffle shaved at the table. This is what the best local cooks recommend for a first encounter with the white truffle flavour.

In the surrounding area, trattorias in Certaldo (15 km from San Miniato) and Castelfiorentino (10 km from San Miniato) also serve seasonal truffle dishes in November. These are less crowded and sometimes use locally sourced truffle from the same zone.

How to get there from Barberino Val d’Elsa

The most direct route from Barberino Val d’Elsa to San Miniato goes northwest through Certaldo on the SP4. From Certaldo continue north toward Castelfiorentino (10 km), then northwest toward San Miniato (15 km). The total distance is approximately 45 km and the drive takes about 40 minutes.

An alternative route goes via Empoli on the main road. This is slightly longer but uses faster roads and may be quicker in traffic.

By train, the Empoli-Pisa line stops at San Miniato-Fucecchio. The station is in the lower town, about 3 km from the historic centre. On fair weekends a shuttle typically connects the station to the centre. The train from Florence Santa Maria Novella to San Miniato takes about 50 minutes and involves a change at Empoli. From Barberino Val d’Elsa, the car is more practical.

Where to stay

Sogno d’Oro in Barberino Val d’Elsa is 40 minutes from San Miniato, making it one of the closest accommodation options in the Chianti and Val d’Elsa area to the truffle fair.

A November stay at the guesthouse, timed to coincide with the truffle fair, combines one of Italy’s most celebrated seasonal food events with the quieter pleasures of the Chianti countryside in late autumn.
