Siena and San Gimignano: The Perfect Day Trip Itinerary
The Siena and San Gimignano itinerary over two days is one of the classics of Tuscany - capable of bringing together two of the region’s most iconic places in a logical and satisfying programme. Siena with its Piazza del Campo and Gothic cathedral, San Gimignano with its medieval towers and Vernaccia: two destinations different in character and scale, yet united by a medieval authenticity that has earned both UNESCO World Heritage status. This itinerary explains how to organise the two days most efficiently, with practical advice on logistics and timing.
Logistics: how to travel between Siena and San Gimignano
Before diving into the detail of the Siena and San Gimignano itinerary, it is worth thinking about logistics. The two cities are about 45 km apart and are connected by car in approximately 45 minutes along the provincial road that crosses the Sienese countryside.
By public transport, the connection exists but requires a change at Poggibonsi, where a local bus runs to San Gimignano. Journey times are longer and the bus frequency does not always suit a tourist itinerary. Those without a car should seriously consider an organised tour with a guide, which includes transport and a guided visit to both cities.
The ideal base for this itinerary is a midpoint between Siena and San Gimignano: the Val d’Elsa, and in particular Barberino Val d’Elsa, is 30 minutes from Siena and 15 from San Gimignano. Staying here means reaching both destinations in a short time.
Day 1: Siena
Morning: Piazza del Campo and the Palazzo Pubblico
The first day of the Siena and San Gimignano itinerary is devoted entirely to Siena. Arriving early in the morning, before 9am, allows you to enjoy Piazza del Campo almost deserted: the square is of pure beauty, with its shell-shaped sloping form, the Torre del Mangia rising 87 metres and the Palazzo Pubblico occupying the lower section.
The Palazzo Pubblico houses the Museo Civico, with the frescoes of Good Government and Bad Government by Ambrogio Lorenzetti - a pictorial cycle unique in the history of medieval art. The long Good Government fresco shows the city of Siena and the Sienese countryside in the fourteenth century with an extraordinary realism for the era: it can be considered the first secular representation of a territory in the history of Italian art.
Climbing the Torre del Mangia is optional but recommended: the view over the city, with its terracotta rooftops and the contrade spreading towards the hills, is memorable.
Afternoon: the Duomo and the Baptistery
The afternoon in Siena is dedicated to the Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta, one of the masterpieces of Italian Gothic. The black-and-white marble facade is a work of art in itself. The interior is even richer: the marble inlay floor with 56 figurative panels, the pulpit by Nicola Pisano, the fourteenth-century stained-glass windows and the Piccolomini Library with Pinturicchio’s frescoes are among the finest things medieval Tuscany produced.
The Baptistery of San Giovanni, beneath the Duomo’s choir, houses the baptismal font by Jacopo della Quercia, Donatello and Ghiberti: three giants of Renaissance sculpture who worked together on a single masterpiece.
Dinner and evening in Siena
Siena has a very pleasant evening life. The area around Piazza del Campo and the Terzo di Città comes alive at dusk. An aperitivo at a bar overlooking the square, dinner in a trattoria in the historic centre with pici all’aglione or ribollita: the first day of the Siena and San Gimignano itinerary closes with the flavours of Sienese cooking.
Day 2: San Gimignano
Morning: the towers and the squares
The second day is dedicated to San Gimignano. The golden rule: arrive before 9:30am. In the early morning hours the village is almost empty, and the magic of the towers emerging in silence is something the afternoon visitors never know.
Piazza della Cisterna and Piazza del Duomo form the medieval heart. The Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta with Ghirlandaio’s frescoes is the main cultural visit. The Torre Grossa, at 54 metres, offers the best view over the village and the surrounding countryside.
Vernaccia and tastings
Vernaccia di San Gimignano, a DOCG white wine, is the perfect accompaniment for a mid-morning stop in one of the wine bars on the square. The Museo della Vernaccia in the medieval Rocca tells the history of the wine. Several wineries in the immediate surroundings of the village offer tastings by appointment: Panizzi and Montenidoli are among the most highly regarded.
Afternoon: the gelato and the final walk
The afternoon in San Gimignano begins with the artisan gelato from Gelateria Dondoli on Piazza della Cisterna - world artisan gelato champion. Crema di Santa Fina and Vernaccia sorbetto are the flavours not to miss.
After the gelato, a walk through the less-frequented alleys of the village reveals quiet corners even at peak hours. Via di San Matteo in the northern part of the village is less crowded than the centre and preserves some of the most authentic medieval houses.
Return and final notes
Returning to base in the late afternoon closes the two-day Siena and San Gimignano itinerary. If you still have energy, the road back towards Barberino Val d’Elsa passes through hills of vineyards and olive groves: stopping at a viewpoint at sunset is the best way to end the journey.
A practical note: both cities have restricted traffic zones. Car parks are outside the walls and well signposted. In Siena the Campo di Marte or Il Sacco car parks are the most convenient. In San Gimignano the northern car park is close to Porta San Giovanni.
