Natural thermal waterfall at Saturnia with steaming water and stone terraces

Saturnia Hot Springs: How to Get There

Understanding how to reach the Terme di Saturnia is the first step towards enjoying one of the most beautiful experiences in Tuscany. The Mulino waterfalls, with their white travertine basins fed by thermal water that emerges at 37.5 degrees, are reachable by car from several directions. Knowing the right roads, where to park and how to navigate the area avoids the frustrations that can spoil an otherwise perfect day, especially in the busiest months.

Saturnia is a small village in the province of Grosseto, in the heart of the inland Maremma, about 65 kilometres from Grosseto. It is not on the Via Aurelia and is not near the main motorway arteries: you need to travel secondary roads, often very scenic, through the hilly Maremma landscape.

How to reach the Terme di Saturnia: the main routes

From Grosseto

From Grosseto, follow signs for Scansano (SR322 or provincial roads). The road climbs quickly into the Maremma interior, crossing Morellino vineyards and hilltop villages. From Scansano continue towards Manciano and then towards Saturnia. The journey from Grosseto takes about 1 hour 15 minutes (approximately 70 km). The roads are scenic but winding: not recommended for those prone to car sickness.

An alternative from Grosseto is to take the SS1 Aurelia south towards Orbetello, then join the road for Manciano (SP161) heading inland. This variant is longer in kilometres but partly on a wider, faster road.

From Rome

From Rome the most direct route takes the A1 motorway (Rome–Florence) to the Orte junction, then the Superstrada dei Due Mari (E45) towards Viterbo and then provincial roads towards Lake Bolsena, Manciano and Saturnia. Journey time is about 2 hours 30 minutes without traffic, approximately 180 km.

A more scenic alternative from Rome is the Via Aurelia (SS1) to Montalto di Castro, then inland towards Pitigliano and Manciano. The route is longer (about 3 hours) but passes through one of the most beautiful stretches of countryside in Lazio and the Tuscan Maremma.

Tip: Those coming from Rome in high season should set off before 8:00 in the morning to avoid Roman traffic and arrive at the waterfalls before they become crowded.

From Florence

From Florence, take the SR2 Cassia towards Siena, then continue towards Grosseto and then towards Scansano and Manciano to Saturnia. The route is about 170 km and takes about 2 hours 30 minutes. Alternative: motorway A1 to the Firenze Sud junction, then the SS2 via Siena.

From Siena

From Siena, take the SR2 Cassia towards Grosseto for about 80 km, then turn off towards Scansano and Saturnia. Journey time: about 1 hour 45 minutes.

From Orbetello and the coast (via Manciano)

Those staying in the Orbetello, Argentario or Capalbio area can reach the Terme di Saturnia in about 45 minutes by taking the SP161 from Orbetello towards Manciano, then the SR74 towards Saturnia. The road is pleasant and passes through the Maremma landscape of hills, oak woods and vineyards. This is the road used by those staying in Montiano.

Parking at the Cascate del Mulino

The car park at the Cascate del Mulino is free and is located directly beside the waterfalls, on the SP161 road between Manciano and Saturnia. Road signs for the “Cascate del Mulino” or “Terme di Saturnia cascate” are present along the road.

Parking problem: In July and August, especially at weekends, the car park fills up by 9:00–10:00 in the morning. Many visitors park along the provincial road for hundreds of metres. In peak months it is essential to arrive before 8:30–9:00 to find a space nearby.

Alternatives: There are secondary paid car parks nearby, signposted along the road. During the season, some farms open their own paid parking in peak hours.

Cascate del Mulino (free) and the thermal spa (paid)

It is important to distinguish between two different facilities in the same area.

The Cascate del Mulino

The Cascate del Mulino are the natural travertine basins with completely free access, open 24 hours a day every day of the year. The water flows from a natural spring at 37.5 degrees and forms a series of terraced basins of different sizes, where you can immerse yourself freely. There are no changing rooms, showers or toilets in the immediate vicinity. You need to bring a towel and change in the open air or return to your car.

The Terme di Saturnia Spa & Golf Resort

The thermal spa is a luxury facility about 1 km from the free waterfalls. It offers heated thermal pools at different temperatures, beauty treatments, therapeutic mud baths, sauna, hammam, restaurant and hotel. Day entry is paid, with prices varying between €30 and €60 per person depending on the season. It is a high-quality facility but not essential for enjoying the thermal experience, which the free waterfalls offer in a completely satisfying way.

Practical tips for reaching the Terme di Saturnia

Weekdays are better: If you can, avoid weekends in July and August. From Monday to Thursday the waterfalls are much less crowded and the experience is considerably more relaxing.

Recommended time: Arrive between 7:00 and 8:30 in the morning. The early-morning light is the most beautiful for photographing the basins, the cool air creates a pleasant contrast with the warm water and there are few other visitors.

What to bring: A towel, flip flops or water shoes (the travertine is slippery), dry clothes to change into, a waterproof bag for valuables, drinking water. Avoid precious jewellery as sulphur can damage it.

Weather: The thermal baths are pleasant in any season. In winter, with cool air, the steam over the water creates an almost magical atmosphere. It is not advisable to visit during summer thunderstorms.

Where to stay

Tramonto Dorato in Montiano is about 45 minutes by car from the Terme di Saturnia, via the SP161 towards Manciano. The distance is ideal for organising both day trips and morning stops at the waterfalls before returning for lunch. The central position of Montiano makes it possible to combine a visit to the thermal baths with the Argentario sea on the same day.
