Porto Santo Stefano: Things to Do in the Argentario Capital
What to do in Porto Santo Stefano is a question that can be answered in many ways, because this is the largest and most lively port of Monte Argentario, a place that combines authentic maritime life with the convenience of tourist services. Porto Santo Stefano is the departure point for ferries to the island of Giglio and the island of Giannutri, the port from which boat excursions around the Argentario depart, and the place where every morning the fish market offers a glimpse of local life that is hard to find elsewhere.
The village develops on a hillside sloping down towards the harbour, with the tall, colourful houses reflected in the water. The waterfront promenade is the heart of social life: bars, restaurants, nautical equipment shops and the quays where everything moors, from small fishing boats to large sailing yachts.
What to do in Porto Santo Stefano: the port and the fish market
The fish market
The Porto Santo Stefano fish market is one of the most important in southern Tuscany. It takes place early in the morning, before dawn, at the port. The fishermen unload the night’s catch: sea bream, sea bass, sole, scorpionfish, octopus, squid, crabs and, when the season allows, amberjack and tuna. It is not a tourist market: it is a real working market, where local traders come to buy and fishing families work to the rhythm of the seasons.
Visiting it at 6:00–7:00 in the morning is an authentic and evocative experience. The smell of the sea, the overlapping voices of negotiations, the crates of ice with gleaming fish: it is a glimpse of Maremma life that remains lodged in the memory.
The walk along the promenade
The Porto Santo Stefano waterfront promenade, from the ferry dock to the marina, is animated at any hour. In the morning there are fishermen repairing their nets, at midday tourists lunching in the portside restaurants, in the evening residents on their evening stroll. The alleys that climb towards the medieval historic centre offer picturesque views over the bay.
Ferries to the island of Giglio and Giannutri
Porto Santo Stefano is the only embarkation point for ferries to the islands of Giglio and Giannutri, both in the Tuscan Archipelago.
Ferry to the island of Giglio
The Toremar company manages regular services to the island of Giglio, with crossings of about one hour. The frequency of services varies by season: in summer there are many departures per day, in winter the service is reduced. Giglio is an island of great beauty, with a picturesque port (Giglio Porto), a medieval village (Giglio Castello) and some of the finest beaches in the Tyrrhenian Sea. The island can be explored by bicycle, which can be taken aboard the ferry.
Ferry to the island of Giannutri
Giannutri is the southernmost of the Tuscan islands and the wildest: very few permanent inhabitants, no hotels, a handful of summer houses and some of the most beautiful seabeds in the Tuscan Archipelago. The ferry to Giannutri departs from Porto Santo Stefano in the summer months with limited frequency. The visit requires organising your own food and water, as services on the island are minimal. On the island are the remains of a first-century AD Roman villa, partly open to visitors.
Boat excursions from the Argentario
Porto Santo Stefano is the main base for boat excursions around the Argentario.
Several companies offer organised tours: circumnavigation of the promontory with stops at the most beautiful coves, excursions to Giglio with lunch on board, snorkelling and guided diving trips. Inflatables and motorboats for hire for those with a nautical licence are found along the marina quays.
The most beautiful coves reachable from Porto Santo Stefano by sea include Cala del Gesso, Cala Moresca, Cala delle Cannelle and the northern side of the promontory, poorly accessible by land. In these coves the water is a brilliant turquoise and the Mediterranean scrub reaches almost to the water.
Where to eat in Porto Santo Stefano
Porto Santo Stefano has a wide choice of restaurants, concentrated mainly on the waterfront and in the streets of the historic centre. The quality of the fish is guaranteed by the proximity of the fish market.
Dishes to try: Linguine with lobster, spaghetti with local clams (arselle), mixed fried paranza fish, raw seafood with Orbetello bottarga. The trattorias less visible from the waterfront often offer more authentic cuisine at more reasonable prices.
Gelato and pastry: The Porto Santo Stefano harbour has some historic pastry shops with excellent products. The Orbetello ring cake, a local sweet made with aniseed, is found in almost all the bakeries in the area.
Practical tips for Porto Santo Stefano
Parking: In high season parking at the port is difficult. Arrive early in the morning or use the uphill car parks with shuttle service. Out of season there are no problems.
Ferry bookings: Ferries to Giglio fill up quickly on weekends in July and August. Book online at least a week in advance in summer.
Useful information: The Porto Santo Stefano port is the reference point for emergencies at sea. The coastguard monitors the port throughout the summer season.
Connection with Porto Ercole: The two Argentario villages are connected by a panoramic road that partially circumnavigates the promontory. The car journey takes about 20–25 minutes.
Where to stay
Tramonto Dorato in Montiano is about 30 minutes by car from Porto Santo Stefano. The distance is easily manageable, both for early-morning boat excursions and for evening dinners at the port. Those who want to board the ferries to Giglio can depart from Montiano and reach the port comfortably.
