Porto Ercole: What to See and Do

What to see in Porto Ercole is a question that every visitor to Monte Argentario should consider carefully, because this fishing village hides much more than its small centre might suggest. Porto Ercole is one of the most fascinating villages on the Tuscan coast: a picturesque harbour, three Spanish fortresses dominating the promontory, beautiful nearby beaches and a historical connection with one of the greatest painters of all time, Caravaggio.

The village sits on the southern side of Monte Argentario, sheltered by a natural bay. The colourful houses sloping down towards the water, the narrow alleys climbing back up towards the fortresses, the fish restaurants on the port and the quiet atmosphere - at least outside high season - make it one of the most characterful centres in all of southern Tuscany.

What to see in Porto Ercole: the Spanish fortresses

The three fortresses of Porto Ercole are the most visible sign of the long period of Spanish domination over the Argentario, from 1557 to 1815. The Spanish “Presidio” of Orbetello included Porto Ercole as a strategic defensive outpost and the fortresses were built or enlarged during the sixteenth century to protect the port from Ottoman attacks and Barbary pirates.

Forte Filippo

Forte Filippo is the largest and most imposing of the three forts. It occupies a dominant position on the promontory above the village, visible from the entire bay. Built in 1557 on pre-existing medieval structures, it was the residence of the Spanish governor and the defensive heart of the presidio. Today it is not open to the public inside, but the walk up to the fort offers a spectacular view over Porto Ercole, the Orbetello lagoon and the profile of the island of Giglio.

Torre della Rocchette and Forte Stella

The other two elements of the Spanish defensive system complete the historical panorama of Porto Ercole. Forte Stella, to the north of the village, is structured in a five-pointed star shape, typical of seventeenth-century fortification. These architectural elements also contribute to the historical fascination of the village.

The port and the medieval village

The port of Porto Ercole is the heart of the town’s social life. Surrounded by colourful houses and restaurants, it is animated from early morning with fishermen unloading fresh catch until the evening when tourists stroll along the waterfront. Access to the medieval village above the port is through a sixteenth-century portal that leads into a labyrinth of narrow alleys and stairways, with glimpses of the sea at every corner.

The historic centre is small but very well kept, with some craft shops, art galleries and shops selling local products. The main square, with its fountain and church, is the gathering point of village life.

Caravaggio at Porto Ercole: a dramatic story

Porto Ercole is the place where Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio, died on 18 July 1610. The painter, then 38 years old, was on the run after a death sentence issued in Rome following a brawl. He had been released from a prison in Porto Ercole in a prisoner exchange, but died shortly afterwards, probably of malarial fever, on the beach just outside the village.

For centuries no one knew where he was buried. In 2010, on the occasion of the four hundredth anniversary of his death, scientific research conducted in the Porto Ercole historical archive led to the identification of his remains in a common grave in the church of Sant’Erasmo. The story of Caravaggio at Porto Ercole is today an integral part of the village’s cultural identity, with a commemorative plaque and a dedicated museum.

Beaches near Porto Ercole

Porto Ercole is surrounded by some of the finest beaches on Monte Argentario.

Cala Galera

Near the main port, Cala Galera is an equipped beach with beach establishments and a luxury marina. It is the most accessible and frequented beach at Porto Ercole. The water is clear and the sandy seabeds are suitable for children.

Spiaggia della Feniglia

A few minutes by car from Porto Ercole, the Feniglia is one of the most beautiful beaches in Tuscany. The long tongue of fine sand, accessible only on foot or by bicycle through the pine forest, offers crystal-clear water and a protected natural environment. There are no beach establishments and access is free.

Beaches reachable by sea

From Porto Ercole harbour, rental boats and inflatables take visitors to the wild coves on the southern side of the promontory. Cala del Gesso, Cala Lunga and a number of unnamed coves are accessible only by sea and offer waters of an unreal colour in a context of pristine Mediterranean scrub.

Where to eat in Porto Ercole

Porto Ercole has a good selection of fish restaurants, from the most informal on the port to the more elegant establishments. The average quality is high, though prices reflect the tourist character of the place.

Look for: spaghetti with bottarga, sea risotto with local products, Livorno-style fish stew (cacciucco) and salt-baked fish. In July and August it is always advisable to book.
