Orbetello: What to See in This Maremma Gem
What to see in Orbetello is a question that many travellers ask themselves when passing along the Via Aurelia towards the Argentario. This city built on a natural peninsula in the middle of the eponymous lagoon is one of the most original destinations in southern Tuscany. It is not simply a place to pass through to reach Monte Argentario: Orbetello has a millennia-old history, a fascinating historic centre, a unique gastronomy and the most important lagoon in Tuscany as its backdrop.
The position of Orbetello is geographically surprising. The city occupies a strip of land that extends towards the centre of the lagoon, surrounded by water on three sides. The two tombolo of the Feniglia and the Giannella connect it to the Monte Argentario promontory to the west and to the coast to the east. The result is a closed lagoon system, with ideal conditions for an extraordinarily rich marine and ornithological fauna.
What to see in Orbetello: the historic centre
The historic centre of Orbetello is characterised by the imposing Spanish walls, built in the sixteenth century during the period of Iberian domination. The Spanish “Presidio” of Orbetello was for centuries one of the most important fortresses on the Tyrrhenian Sea. Today the walls are almost intact and can be partly walked, offering spectacular views over the lagoon.
The Cathedral of the Assumption
The cathedral of Orbetello, dedicated to the Assumption, is a religious building of great historical interest. The fourteenth-century Gothic facade has been modified several times over the centuries, but retains some of its original characteristics. The interior is simple and intimate, with artworks from different eras. Worth a twenty-minute stop.
The Polveriera Guzman
This sixteenth-century building, originally the explosives store of the Spanish garrison, has been restored and now houses a museum and exhibition space. The architectural structure is interesting in itself, with the large barrel-vaulted arches characteristic of Spanish military architecture.
Walk along the waterfront promenade
The Orbetello waterfront, on the lagoon side, is the best place to enjoy the atmosphere of the city. At sunset, the lagoon waters turn orange and pink, the flamingos move towards the shallowest sandbanks and the air fills with the brackish scent characteristic of these environments. There are bars and restaurants with tables overlooking the water.
The lagoon and the WWF nature reserve
The Orbetello lagoon is one of the most important protected natural areas in Italy. The WWF-managed nature reserve occupies the eastern part of the lagoon and hosts permanent populations of pink flamingos, little egrets, grey herons, spoonbills, avocets, black-winged stilts and dozens of other species. In winter thousands of migratory waterbirds arrive.
The reserve is open to the public with organised guided tours. The walking paths and observation hides allow you to approach the wildlife without disturbing it. It is advisable to book the visit in advance, especially at weekends.
Orbetello bottarga: the taste of the lagoon
The mullet bottarga of Orbetello is one of the most prized gastronomic products in Italy. The mullet roe, salted and pressed, is dried for weeks and then sold whole or grated. The flavour is intense and marine, with a complexity that recalls the foie gras of the sea. Orbetello is one of the very few places in Italy where grey mullet are still caught in the traditional way in the lagoon and processed artisanally.
Bottarga is bought in specialist shops in the historic centre and used grated on pasta (typically spaghetti), in shavings on bruschetta with olive oil, or as a dressing for seafood salads. Buying it directly in Orbetello, where the quality is guaranteed and prices are more reasonable than elsewhere, is one of the best gastronomic souvenirs of the Maremma.
The Tarot Garden by Niki de Saint Phalle
About 15 minutes by car from Orbetello, in the direction of Capalbio, is the Tarot Garden: a contemporary art park with 22 giant sculptures inspired by the Tarot cards. The figures, up to 15 metres tall and covered in coloured ceramics and mirrors, emerge from the Mediterranean scrub like creatures from a fantastic world. The Franco-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle dedicated twenty years to its creation. The garden is open from April to October and is easily reached by car.
Orbetello as the gateway to the Argentario
Orbetello is also the privileged access point to Monte Argentario. The two roads leading to the promontory depart respectively from the Feniglia (towards Porto Ercole) and the Giannella (towards Porto Santo Stefano). Driving along the tombolo road is already in itself an experience: the carriageway is flanked by pine forest on one side and the sea on the other.
