Medieval Villages of the Maremma: A Complete Guide
The Tuscan Maremma is home to some of the most captivating medieval villages in Italy. The medieval villages of the Maremma Tuscany have remained extraordinarily authentic, far removed from the mass tourism that crowds the most celebrated art cities. Hills covered in Mediterranean scrub, medieval towers emerging among olive trees, cobbled alleys where time seems to have stood still: this is the most faithful portrait of this land.
Every village tells centuries of Etruscan, Roman and medieval history. Visiting them means immersing yourself in a genuine Italy, where local flavours, unspoiled landscapes and the hospitality of the inhabitants complete a travel experience that is hard to forget.
The most beautiful medieval villages of the Tuscan Maremma
The province of Grosseto concentrates most of the most evocative villages. The variety is remarkable: from centres perched on volcanic tuff like Pitigliano to coastal towns like Capalbio, each place offers a unique character and atmosphere.
Capalbio
Defined as the “little Tuscany” for the beauty of its hilly landscape, Capalbio is a medieval gem a few kilometres from the coast. The fourteenth-century walls are perfectly preserved and enclose a compact historic centre, with the Aldobrandeschi Tower dominating the village’s profile. The cobbled streets, restaurants with Maremma cuisine and craft shops create a relaxed and authentic atmosphere. Nearby are some of the most beautiful and wild beaches in Tuscany, including the Feniglia and the Lago Albano nature reserve.
Magliano in Toscana
Just 10 minutes by car from Montiano, Magliano in Toscana is one of the best-preserved villages in the Maremma. The almost-intact medieval walls and Aldobrandeschi bastions surround a historic centre rich in Renaissance palaces, Romanesque churches and a quiet, intimate atmosphere. The area is famous for the production of extra virgin olive oil and Morellino di Scansano wine. The walk along the walls, with views over the hills planted with vines and olive trees, is one of the most pleasant experiences in the inland Maremma.
Pitigliano
Pitigliano is perhaps the most spectacular village in the Maremma. Built on an imposing tuff cliff, the town rises steeply on three sides, with a breathtaking scenic effect. Called the “little Jerusalem” for the historic presence of a Jewish community, Pitigliano preserves a medieval ghetto, a restored synagogue and a museum of Jewish culture. The caves carved into the tuff, used for centuries as wine cellars, are open to visitors and offer a fascinating glimpse into the daily life of the past.
Sovana, Sorano and the Etruscan Via Cava
In the heart of southern Tuscany, Sovana and Sorano form together with Pitigliano a triangle of Etruscan villages of extraordinary beauty.
Sovana
Small but precious, Sovana is one of the oldest towns in Tuscany. Despite today counting only a few hundred inhabitants, it preserves a Romanesque cathedral of great merit and an almost intact medieval square. In the surrounding area are some of the most important Etruscan necropolises in the region, with rock-cut tombs carved directly into the tuff. The famous “vie cave” - paths cut into tuff up to 20 metres high - connect the Etruscan sites and offer evocative walks through the wooded landscape.
Sorano
Sorano is perched on a tuff outcrop above the Lente river. The medieval historic centre, with its steep alleys and dwellings carved into the rock, creates an almost surreal atmosphere. The Orsini Fortress dominates the village from above and today houses a museum and tourist apartments. As in Sovana, the Etruscan vie cave are also accessible on foot here and represent one of the most characteristic natural and historical attractions of the entire Maremma.
Manciano and the surroundings of the Terme di Saturnia
Manciano is a quiet town perched on a hill, with a simple but pleasant historic centre and a medieval fortress worth visiting. Its strategic position makes it an excellent base for excursions into the inland Maremma. A few kilometres away are the famous Terme di Saturnia, with the free-access Mulino waterfalls. The surrounding area offers gentle landscapes, cultivated countryside and secondary roads ideal for cycling and horse riding.
Practical tips for visiting the villages of the Maremma
Exploring the medieval villages of the Tuscan Maremma requires a bit of organisation, especially if you want to visit more than one in a few days.
Best period: Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are the ideal seasons. Temperatures are mild, the villages are less crowded than in summer and the landscape is at its most beautiful, with the countryside in bloom or the vines golden with harvest.
Getting around: A car is almost essential. The villages of the Maremma are often difficult to reach by public transport. The secondary roads are picturesque but require attention.
Parking: In many villages the historic centre has restricted traffic. Car parks are generally free and located just outside the walls. In Pitigliano and Sorano there are convenient car parks near the entrance to the centre.
What to eat: Don’t miss Morellino di Scansano (DOC red wine), Maremma cured meats, ribollita, acquacotta and grilled meat. In every village you will find osterias and trattorias offering authentic local cuisine.
Combining sea and villages: The location of the Maremma makes it easy to alternate visits to the villages with the beaches of the coast, from the Maremma Park to Capalbio and the Argentario. A week is the minimum time to appreciate both souls of this land.
