Maremma with Kids: The Best Family Activities
The Maremma with kids is one of the best choices for families looking for a complete holiday in Italy. Safe beaches with shallow waters, wild nature to explore, wildlife to observe, medieval villages that seem to come out of a fairy tale: this region offers a range of experiences suited to all ages, from the very young to older children.
The variety of the Maremma territory is its strength for families. In a single week you can alternate the sea, the nature park, horse-riding excursions and a visit to a village, without ever driving more than an hour. This makes the Maremma a very practical destination even with small children, who need short travel times.
Family beaches in the Maremma
The Maremma beaches are ideal for children for several reasons: fine sand, shallow and gently sloping bottoms, clean water and a good number of free beaches where you don’t need to pay anything to spend a day at the sea.
La Giannella
The Giannella is the northern tombolo that separates the Orbetello lagoon from the sea. It is a long, sandy beach with very shallow water for a long stretch, perfectly suited to children. The presence of some beach establishments makes it convenient for families, with services such as showers, changing rooms and pedalo hire. The lagoon behind creates a pleasant microclimate, with less wind than on open beaches.
Talamone
The small village of Talamone, about 15 minutes by car from Montiano, has a quiet beach with shallow waters and crystal-clear sea. The village is small and pretty, with a medieval fortress and a marina. The main beach is suitable for children and nearby there are restaurants and bars for a lunch stop or an ice cream.
The Feniglia beaches
The Feniglia is an extraordinary beach: very fine white sand, clear water, shaded pine forest. Access is exclusively on foot or by bicycle, which keeps it free from cars. Children can move freely between the pine forest and the sea. The waters are shallow for several metres from the shore. Bear in mind that during summer it can be very crowded. Arriving early in the morning is the best advice.
The Maremma Park with children
The Maremma Regional Park, known as the Uccellina Park, is an unforgettable experience for children. The wildlife you encounter along the trails includes wild boar, fallow deer, foxes, porcupines, land tortoises and a great variety of birds.
Trails suitable for families
Not all the park’s trails are suitable for small children. The shorter and flatter paths, such as the trail leading to the Torre di Collelungo through the Alberese pine forest, are accessible even with children aged 5–6. The longer trails towards the Uccellina towers require a minimum of physical stamina, but are still walkable with children from 8–10 years up if you walk at a gentle pace.
Entry to the park is through the visitor centre at Alberese, where you can purchase tickets and receive trail maps. The park’s naturalist guides organise themed excursions, some specifically dedicated to families with children, with nature observation activities and educational games.
Wildlife: a mini safari
One of the most fascinating aspects of the Maremma for children is the chance to see wild animals in their natural habitat. The Maremma horses, with their robust build and wild manes, graze freely in some areas of the park. Fallow deer often approach cultivated fields at dawn and dusk. Pink flamingos can be observed in the Orbetello lagoon virtually all year round.
The Orbetello lagoon is an extraordinary place for birdwatching with children. With a simple pair of binoculars you can observe dozens of species of waterbirds: grey herons, little egrets, spoonbills, avocets and, of course, flamingos. Observation is possible from various points along the road that crosses the lagoon.
Activities and experiences for children in the Maremma
Beyond the sea and the park, the Maremma offers many activities suited to younger visitors.
Horse-riding: Several farm holiday businesses in the area offer horse rides suitable for children, with ponies and gentle horses for the smallest. It is a wonderful way to explore the Maremma countryside differently.
Visits to dairies and farms: Many farms in the area welcome children for guided tours. You can see how cheese is made, how olive oil is produced, and have a snack with genuinely fresh local products.
The Tarot Garden near Capalbio: The giant coloured sculptures by Niki de Saint Phalle are an irresistible attraction for children. The fantastic figures, up to 15 metres tall and covered in ceramics and mirrors, look like creatures from an imaginary world. The visit lasts about two hours and leaves children wide-eyed with wonder.
Snorkelling in the coves of the Argentario: For children from 6–7 years upwards, snorkelling in the crystal-clear coves of Monte Argentario is a magical experience. The rocky seabeds host colourful fish, sea urchins, starfish and octopus. No sophisticated equipment is needed: mask, snorkel and fins are enough.
Practical tips for families
Self-catering accommodation: Having a kitchen available makes life with children enormously easier. You can prepare breakfast at convenient times, cook a simple meal when the little ones are hungry out of hours and take sandwiches to the beach instead of having to find a restaurant at every meal.
Avoid August in the Uccellina Park: The park in August is hot and dry, and the forest trails expose you to the sun. Spring and autumn are the best seasons for children: mild temperatures, active wildlife and fewer crowds.
What to bring to the beach: High-protection sunscreen, a hat, plenty of water and water shoes for rocky bottoms. On free beaches there are no drinking fountains.
Reassuring distances: With a base in Montiano, the main attractions for children are all less than 35–40 minutes by car, which eliminates the long transfers that tire small children.
Where to stay
Tramonto Dorato in Montiano is particularly well suited to families with children. The 40-square-metre apartment has a fully equipped kitchen for preparing meals comfortably, a barbecue for outdoor dinners and a panoramic portico. The location is quiet and safe, in a small village away from traffic. Talamone is 15 minutes away, the Feniglia beaches 20 minutes.
