Panoramic view from Piazzale Michelangelo over Florence at sunset

Piazzale Michelangelo: How to Get There (and When)

Piazzale Michelangelo is Florence’s most famous viewpoint and one of Italy’s most photographed views. Knowing how to reach Piazzale Michelangelo in the most convenient way - and above all at the right time of day - makes the difference between a rushed visit and an unforgettable memory.

How to get to Piazzale Michelangelo by bus

The simplest way to reach Piazzale Michelangelo is by bus. ATAF line 13 departs from Santa Maria Novella station and arrives directly at the piazzale in about 15–20 minutes. The main stops along the route include Piazza San Marco and the Santa Croce area.

Bus 13 runs approximately every 20 minutes and covers the route from SMN station with a stop on Via di San Niccolò (at the base of the climb) and a final stop at the piazzale. A single ticket costs €1.70 and is valid for 90 minutes for any connections.

Alternatively, line 12 covers the circular route along the Viale dei Colli, passing Piazzale Michelangelo in the opposite direction. Both lines are convenient: line 12 is particularly pleasant as it runs along Viale Galileo and offers panoramic views along the way.

Note: during summer peak hours, especially in the late afternoon when everyone heads up for the sunset, the bus can be crowded. In these cases, consider walking up and taking the bus back down.

How to get there on foot: routes from the city

The walk up to Piazzale Michelangelo is an experience worth doing at least once. There are two main routes.

The staircase from Lungarno Serristori

The most direct route starts from Lungarno Serristori, on the Arno, from Piazza Giuseppe Poggi. From here a double monumental staircase climbs directly to the piazzale in about 10 minutes’ walking. The staircase is paved and the route is suitable for everyone. Along the climb you pass the Neptune fountain and, halfway up, the Rose Garden (open all year except in certain seasons).

From Piazza Santo Spirito, in the heart of the Oltrarno, the route towards the piazzale is about 20 minutes on foot: Via Maggio, Piazza della Calza, Via del Gelsomino to the base of the staircase. This is the most pleasant walk and the most recommended if you are starting from the neighbourhood.

The panoramic route via Via di San Leonardo

For those who enjoy longer, more scenic climbs, Via di San Leonardo starts from Porta San Miniato (reachable from Piazza della Passera in the Oltrarno) and climbs through vegetable gardens, vineyards and historic villas to the Forte Belvedere. From here, following Viale dei Bastioni, you arrive at Piazzale Michelangelo. The route takes about 30–35 minutes and is one of Florence’s most beautiful walks, little known to tourists.

When to go: sunset and the best hours

Getting the timing right for Piazzale Michelangelo is a question of planning. Sunset is the main spectacle: in summer it falls around 8:30–9pm, in winter already at 5pm. Arrive at least 30 minutes early to find a good spot on the balustrade.

Early morning is the alternative choice: at 7am the piazzale is almost deserted and the light on the Arno has an extraordinary quality. The view is different from sunset but equally beautiful. The cool morning air makes the walk up even more pleasant.

Avoid the central hours of August: the piazzale is in full sun and the heat reflected from the marble is intense. The best hours in summer are 7am to 10am or from 6:30pm onwards.

What to see near the piazzale

The Basilica of San Miniato al Monte

Just above Piazzale Michelangelo, 5 minutes’ walk up the staircase on the left side of the piazzale, is the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte. It is one of Italy’s most beautiful Romanesque churches: the white and green marble facade dates from the eleventh and twelfth centuries and preserves its original colours as few other Tuscan churches do. The interior has a thirteenth-century Cosmatesque floor and a sacristy frescoed by Spinello Aretino.

The Benedictine monks who live in the attached convent sing Gregorian Vespers every day in the late afternoon: attending the chant in that basilica at sunset is an experience difficult to forget.

The Forte di Belvedere

The Forte di Belvedere, built in 1595 to a design by Bernardo Buontalenti for the Medici family, is located above Via di San Leonardo. The fort hosts contemporary art exhibitions during the summer season and from its terrace you enjoy one of Florence’s most complete panoramic views. Access is seasonal and subject to the exhibitions calendar.

The Rose Garden

The Rose Garden (Giardino delle Rose), along the staircase leading up to the piazzale, is open all year and is free. In May, with the flowering of more than 350 varieties of roses, it is a place of extraordinary beauty. Even outside the flowering period, the cypress trees, hedges and view over the historic centre make it a pleasant stop.

Practical information

The piazzale is open 24 hours a day and access is always free. Bars and kiosks at the piazzale are open at variable hours: do not rely on them for water, always bring a bottle.

At the top of the piazzale there is a bronze copy of Michelangelo’s David, positioned on the side facing the Duomo. This is not the original (that is in the Accademia), but the panoramic setting makes it particularly photogenic.

For those with limited mobility, bus 13 is the solution: the piazzale is accessible and the main balustrades can be reached without steps.

Where to stay

Homelink De’ Medici is located at Via Pisana 191, in the Oltrarno: about 15 minutes’ walk from Piazzale Michelangelo via the Lungarno staircase, or just a short walk from bus 13. It is the ideal base for those who want to climb to the piazzale at dawn or at sunset without travelling long distances.
