Boboli Garden with Children: What to Expect

Boboli Garden with children

The Boboli Garden sits immediately behind Palazzo Pitti, on the south side of the Arno river. It covers approximately 45,000 square metres and rises steeply up the hillside of the Oltrarno neighbourhood. The garden was commissioned by the Medici family in the mid-16th century and has been shaped, planted, and modified over four centuries.

For families with children, Boboli is one of the most accessible outdoor cultural experiences in Florence. It combines open space, sculptures, fountains, and views in a way that holds attention for children of many different ages.

The garden is not a flat park. There are significant slopes, staircases, and gravel paths throughout. A pushchair is manageable on the main central axis but becomes difficult on the steeper side routes. A carrier works better for children under 2.

What to see and do

The main entrance from Palazzo Pitti opens onto a wide courtyard and then leads into the Amphitheatre, a large oval open-air space with stone seating. The Amphitheatre contains an Egyptian obelisk from the 2nd century BC at its centre. Children find the scale of the obelisk and the surrounding stone seating striking.

The central avenue leads upward to the large Neptune fountain, which sits in the middle of a reflective pool. The pool is surrounded by a low stone balustrade and is a natural stopping point. Children between 4 and 12 reliably pause here for several minutes.

Further up the hill, the Kaffeehaus is an 18th-century pavilion at the top of the garden with a viewing terrace. The terrace offers one of the best panoramic views of Florence without requiring a climb up a tower or a bell tower. The view extends across the rooftops to the Duomo and beyond. There is a bar inside the Kaffeehaus open seasonally.

The Grotto of Buontalenti, located near the Pitti entrance, is the most unusual feature in the garden. Built in the 1580s, it is a cave-like structure decorated with stalactite-style rock formations, embedded shells, and sculptural figures half-emerging from the walls. Children between 6 and 14 tend to find this genuinely fascinating. It looks different from anything else in the garden or the city.

The Isolotto, a pond with a small island and a central fountain of Perseus and Andromeda, is located at the far western end of the garden. The walk to the Isolotto from the main entrance takes about 20 minutes at a slow pace. The pond is surrounded by lemon trees in large terracotta pots, and the island is accessible only on foot across a small bridge. The atmosphere here is quiet and slightly removed from the main tourist circulation.

Family entrance prices

Entry to the Boboli Garden in 2026 is included in the Palazzo Pitti combined ticket. The standard combined ticket costs around 16 euros per adult and covers the Palatine Gallery, the Modern Art Gallery, and the Boboli Garden.

Children under 18 who are citizens of EU member states enter free. Non-EU children between 6 and 17 pay a reduced rate of approximately 2 euros. Children under 6 enter free regardless of nationality.

The first Sunday of each month is free entry for all visitors at all Italian state museums and sites. This includes the Boboli Garden. Queues on these days are substantially longer than usual. Arriving before 09:00 is the only reliable strategy to avoid significant waiting.

If you plan to visit multiple sites in Florence over two or three days, the Firenze Card (85 euros per adult, 72 hours) includes the Boboli Garden and Palazzo Pitti among its covered venues.

How long you need

For families with children between 5 and 12, a comfortable visit to the Boboli Garden takes between 90 minutes and two and a half hours. A shorter visit of 60 minutes is possible if you focus on the main central axis, the Grotto of Buontalenti, and the view from the Kaffeehaus.

A complete walk covering the Isolotto and the outer paths requires about three hours. This is best suited to older children and teenagers who are comfortable walking on uneven gravel paths for extended periods.

The most practical approach for most families is to visit in the morning, allow 90 to 120 minutes, and leave before midday. The garden becomes significantly warmer and more crowded between 11:00 and 14:00 from May through September.

Practical tips for the visit

Wear comfortable shoes with a grip sole. The gravel paths throughout the garden become loose and slightly slippery on slopes. Sandals without straps or flat-soled shoes cause difficulty on the steeper sections.

Water is available from drinking fountains at two points along the main central axis. These fountains provide municipal water and are safe to drink. In summer, carrying a reusable bottle is useful.

There are toilets near the main entrance from Palazzo Pitti and near the Kaffeehaus. The facilities near the Kaffeehaus are smaller and sometimes busy during peak morning hours.

Photography is permitted throughout the garden without restriction. The best light for photographs is in the morning before 10:00 or in the late afternoon after 16:00.

Dogs are permitted in the Boboli Garden on a lead. If your family is travelling with a dog, the garden is one of the few major Florence cultural sites where this is possible.

The garden is open every day except the first and last Monday of each month. Opening hours in 2026 run from 08:15 to approximately one hour before sunset. The closing time varies by month, ranging from 16:30 in January and February to 19:30 in June and July. Check the official Polo Museale della Toscana website for the exact schedule before visiting.
