Christmas Markets in Florence with Kids

Florence in December has a different atmosphere from the rest of the year. The historic center fills with decorations, Christmas markets open in the main squares, and the tourist numbers drop compared to summer. For families with children it is one of the best times to visit the city.

Christmas markets for families in Florence

Florence has several Christmas markets that open in November and stay open until the end of December or early January.

Weihnachtsmarkt Firenze (Piazza Santa Croce): Florence’s most famous Christmas market takes its inspiration from Germany. Born out of a twinning with Nuremberg, it has stalls selling German and Tuscan artisan products: mulled wine, candlesticks, carved wooden decorations, Christmas pastries. Around 80-100 stalls in total. Open from late November to late December, every day from 10am to 9pm.

Christmas Market at Piazza Annunziata: smaller and less touristy. Tuscan artisans with handmade products. A more intimate atmosphere. Well suited to families with young children because it is less crowded.

Natale con i Tuoi (Fortezza da Basso): a crafts fair with covered pavilions. Not just Christmas: there is everything from clothing to food products. Entry is paid (about 5-10 euros). For families who want to do serious Christmas shopping, it is a practical option.

Fierucola di Natale Artisan Market (Piazza Santissima Annunziata): the organic market has a special Christmas edition. Natural products, sustainable crafts, organic food. Family-friendly.

Markets with rides and entertainment

For children, the most enjoyable part of a Christmas market is often not the stalls but the attractions.

Christmas carousel: during the festive season traditional carousels appear in some of the central squares. The exact location changes each year. There is usually one in Piazza della Repubblica and sometimes near the Fortezza da Basso.

Christmas train: in some years a small train is organized to travel around the historic center. It is not guaranteed every year: check the Christmas events program on the City Council website.

Ice skating: some venues set up temporary ice rinks during the festive season. The location changes each year. Prices about 8-12 euros per adult (skates included) and 6-8 euros for children.

Shows and entertainment: many markets have puppet shows, entertainers, and roving Father Christmases. No need to pay: they are part of the general atmosphere.

What children like to buy at the markets

The Christmas market stalls offer all kinds of products that appeal to children.

Christmas decorations: snowmen, glass baubles, nativity figurines. Prices from 2 to 20 euros.

Wooden products: at the Weihnachtsmarkt there are German stalls selling toys, nutcrackers, and carved wooden objects. A simple wooden toy starts at about 8-10 euros.

Sweet treats: strudel, Lebkuchen (spiced German biscuits), marron glace, torrone, hot chocolate. Children eat practically everything. Budget for sweet treats: 5-10 euros per head.

Tuscan artisan products: ceramics, soaps, candles, jams. Not the top choice for children, but good gifts to take home.

How to dress for the cold

In Florence in December average temperatures range from 4 to 12 degrees Celsius. At night it can drop below freezing. If you are going to the evening markets, dress for a cold night out.

For children: layered clothing (thermal vest, jumper, winter jacket), hat, gloves, and waterproof shoes. A light jacket is not enough.

For adults: a warm coat, scarf, and boots. The floor of some squares is stone or marble: the cold comes up through your feet.

Mulled wine is the Christmas market drink. It warms you through and the scent of cinnamon and cloves fills the whole square. Children are served hot tea, hot chocolate, or non-alcoholic punch.
