Mountain Day Trip from Florence with Family
Florence sits at the foot of the Apennine mountains, and the nearest mountain destinations are less than an hour’s drive away. A day in the hills offers a complete change of scenery from the city, especially in summer when the mountains are significantly cooler.
Whether you want easy forest walks, a ski day in winter, or a picnic at altitude, the options around Florence are practical and varied for families with children.
Mountain day trip with family from Florence
The mountains north of Florence are part of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. The highest peaks in this area reach 2,165 metres at Monte Cimone, but you do not need to go that high for a good family day out.
The Mugello valley, just 30 km north of Florence, provides a gentle introduction to the Apennine landscape. At higher altitudes, the Abetone ski resort is about 90 km from Florence and is the main mountain destination for Florentine families.
Mountain days work well for children aged 4 and up. Younger children are fine too if you stick to short flat trails. Teenagers often appreciate the freedom of open space after days of museum-heavy city sightseeing.
The nearest destinations
The Futa Pass sits 37 km north of Florence at 903 metres altitude. It is reachable in about 40 minutes by car via the SS65. The pass area has picnic sites, a German military cemetery, and wide views. It is a good first stop for families new to mountain driving.
Vallombrosa, about 40 km east of Florence at 1,000 metres, is a forested plateau surrounding a Benedictine monastery founded in the 11th century. The ancient fir forest is remarkable and the walks around the monastery are easy and well-shaded.
The Calvana regional park sits just 20 km northwest of Florence and reaches 973 metres. It is one of the closest true hiking areas to the city. Trails are well-marked and suitable for children aged 6 and up.
Abetone, at 1,388 metres, is the main mountain resort of Tuscany. It offers skiing in winter and mountain biking or hiking in summer.
What to do there with children
At Vallombrosa, the forest trail circuit takes about 2 hours at a relaxed family pace. The monastery itself can be visited by booking a guided tour. The forest has giant firs over 300 years old that are impressive even to children who are not particularly interested in nature.
At Abetone, summer activities include guided mountain bike descents, orienteering for children aged 8 and up, and a small adventure park with zip lines and rope bridges. The adventure park charges around 15 to 20 euros per child for a 2-hour session.
The Parco Avventura Abetone is the main family outdoor activity centre. It has routes categorised by difficulty and age, starting from age 4. Equipment including harnesses is provided. Book online in advance in August.
At the Futa Pass, the walk through the German war cemetery is a sobering but meaningful experience for older children aged 10 and up. The cemetery contains over 30,000 graves and the landscaping is carefully maintained.
Summer vs winter differences
In summer, from June to September, the mountains around Florence offer temperatures 8 to 12 degrees Celsius cooler than the city. This makes them ideal for families escaping August heat. Trails are mostly dry and accessible without specialist equipment.
In winter, from December to March, Abetone receives reliable snowfall and operates ski lifts from late November onward. A day ski pass costs around 30 to 35 euros for adults and 20 to 25 euros for children aged 8 to 14. Children under 8 ski free with a paying adult.
Ski rental at Abetone for a full set of equipment costs approximately 20 euros per person per day. Ski school for children aged 4 and up runs in group lessons of 2 hours. Group lessons cost around 35 to 40 euros.
Spring and autumn are good for quiet hiking with far fewer visitors. Trails are green in spring and the beech forests turn amber and red in October.
Day logistics
By car is the most practical option for mountain day trips. Most mountain areas are not served by regular public transport convenient for day visitors.
Leave Florence before 8:00 for summer mountain days. Traffic on the SS65 toward Abetone can be heavy on summer weekends.
Pack layers even in August. Temperatures at 1,000 metres can drop significantly in the afternoon. Bring rain gear as mountain weather changes quickly.
Mountain roads near Abetone have tight bends and require careful driving. A standard rental car handles them fine. In winter, snow chains or winter tyres are mandatory on some mountain roads.
Fuel up in Florence or at major towns before heading up, as mountain petrol stations are scarce and more expensive.
